Mary Ellen Derwis-Balaz, Lmt., Cht. received her first massage therapy session while attending a health fair. During the experience, a little voice inside told her that massage therapy was what she should be doing with her life. She began her training within two weeks and earned her Licensed Massage Therapist certification in 1992 graduating at the top of her class with the highest scores in anatomy, physiology, and massage therapy. In 1995 Mary Ellen became a Reiki Master Practitioner and teacher, and in 1998 became a certified hypnotherapist registered with the International Medical/Dental Hypnoanesthesia Association (IMDHA). In her journey she has studied with leaders in both the massage and hypnosis fields across the country. Her credits include teaching massage techniques to third year medical students at Case Western Reserve University, and serving as the Vice-President of the Advisory Board to Tri-C Eastern Campus School of Massotherapy. Mary Ellen draws a parallel between the role she fills and that of a detective, always searching for the clues that will enable her to provide a satisfactory result for those she serves. We met with Mary Ellen recently, and listened as she described her background and the services she offers;

I have experience with many facets of massage therapy, ranging from the spa experience to medical massage. The modalities I offer include Lymphatic Drainage, Cranio Sacral, Neuromuscular Massage, Myofascial Release, Thai Massage, Chi Gong Massage, Gua Sha, traditional Hawaiian Lomi and Hot Stones, and Reiki, in addition to relaxation, deep tissue, clinical, and Swedish massage. Sessions are available by appointment both at my new Brecksville Road location in the Gateway Building and on an out-call basis.

When you come into my space, you're coming into a place where someone's going to listen as you explain how you feel, what is happening with your body, and where you are experiencing discomfort. I will use this information to determine which of the many modalities I offer will help you the most. I will listen to what you have to say and thoroughly explain what I am going to do. In addition, I will make suggestions regarding things you can do at home to improve your condition. I encourage you to integrate your body, mind, and spirit as you begin your journey in healing.

I use my experience obtained in world class spas to create personalized in-home spa experiences. I offer hand and foot scrubs, skin brushing, massages, and a variety of my own signature essential oils. Each session is tailored to the needs and desires of my client, and can include personal sessions as well as group sessions for spouses, friends, and bridal parties. I have arranged a private session as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife in celebration of their wedding anniversary. Without his wife's prior knowledge, he hired a cook to prepare a gourmet dinner for two, a butler to serve the wine, and he sprinkled rose petals on the floor leading from the door to the massage area I had set up in their home.

I pamper my clients and strive to ensure they feel relaxed. Massage therapy is all about treating pain, discomfort, and stress, and once a patient begins to relax the therapy becomes easier and much more effective.
